CASE HARDENING STEEL: WHAT ARE THE CHARACTERISTICS?
Case Hardening is the process of increasing the hardness of metal surfaces by using physical or chemical methods. Which characteristics are associated with case-hardened steel? The grades in EN10084 have been summarized in a few points.
- Composition low in carbon
According to the EN10084 standard, whether it is carbon steel or alloy steel, the carbon content is obviously below 0.3%. Why is this? The reason for this is due to the fact that steel with a low carbon content tends to be softer, so it is necessary to increase the hardness of the steel.
- Good wear resistance and high surface hardness
To ensure that the surface of the material has a sufficiently high hardness, it will be hardened after it has been carburized, nitrided, or surface quenched. In addition to improving the wear resistance of the material, the increase in hardness will also improve its wear resistance.
- Stable impact resistance and good core toughness
Surface hardening is preferable to hardening the whole metal object for a number of reasons. As a result of also hardening the core, the steel will become brittle and hard, incapable of absorbing impact loads, and will eventually fracture. In summary, this requires the steel to be flexible and impact-resistant.

A QUICK GUIDE TO 20MNCR5/1.7147 STEEL
What is 20MnCr5 gear steel?
As a Cr-Mn series case-hardening steel, 20MnCr5 alloy steel is widely used to manufacture small and medium-sized parts with medium loads and low impacts after carburizing, such as gears, which is one of its most important applications.
20MnCrS5 alloy Steel: What is it?
20MnCrS5, except for the S element, has the same elements as 20MnCr5. Why do we need to change the S element? Wouldn’t it be harmful to have something like this with us? Proper control of the S element can significantly improve the cutting performance of the material, which is desirable.
The materials with high Mn content are generally difficult to process. After annealing, 20MnCr5 is relatively easy to process. However, after quenching, this steel becomes very hard, and conventional tools cannot process it.
What is the hardness of 20MnCr5 alloy steel?
The hardness of 20MnCr5 alloy steel is normally around 200HB after annealing or normalizing, though it may not reach the application level right away. However, after surface hardening, the hardness can reach 60HRC, and the core has about 40HRC, which has good application potential.

COMPOSITION OF 20MNCR5 ALLOY STEEL
One of the best and most important things to determine if a particular steel grade is right for you is to understand what makes it up.
Carbon (C) | Chromium (Cr) | Manganese (Mn) | Phosphorus (P) | Sulfur (S) | Silicon |
0.17 to 0.22% | 1.00 to 1.30% | 1.10 to 1.40% | ≤0.035% | ≤0.035% | ≤0.4% |
It is easy to recognize and distinguish whether you need 20MnCr5 / 1.7147 steel with this table.
In order to help you better understand what each of these alloying elements contributes to the overall steel, here is what each does:
Chromium
The higher the chromium content, the better the rust or oxidation-resistance of a particular material. As a result, instead of the steel surface oxidizing, the chromium oxidizes first and forms a protective layer.
Manganese
The more manganese a steel contains, the harder, stronger, and more durable it is. High manganese levels will result in a slower quenching rate because of the slower rate of quenching.
Phosphorus
The amount of phosphorus in a steel or material determines its strength and hardness. A steel with high levels of phosphorus will have increased hardness, strength, and machinability.
Silicon
When silicon (Si) is added to steels, it increases both yield strength and tensile strength. Forgeability, hardness, and permeability of the steel are also enhanced and developed as a result.
Sulfur
A particular steel is less weldable when sulfur is added, yet more machinable when sulfur is added. When sulfur is added to steel, it is carefully balanced with manganese levels to prevent the steel from becoming less ductile, less tough, and more brittle under heat.
These are the primary alloying elements in 20MnCr5 / 1.7147 steel, but this isn’t a complete list. There are many others as well!
