    Fabrication of Abrasion Resistant Steel :

    Welding :

    The Abrazo 400 can be welded using MMA, MOG, and SAW without preheating under normal conditions (if you require advice on welding, machining, or forming, please contact any of our offices), up to a combined thickness of 60mm, provided hydrogen controlled electrodes are used. According to BS 5135, consumables should be dried according to scale ‘D’. Weld metal is exposed to wear conditions, so consumables should be chosen accordingly.

    Machining :

    Hardness makes machining or drilling more difficult. It is necessary to use high-grade cobalt HSS E drilling tools for 400BHN and hard metal drilling tools for 500BHN.

    Forming :

    Cold forming is possible with abrasion steels. Three factors should be considered when comparing steels with lower yields:

    • Higher press forces
    • A greater bend radius is required
    • Spring back.

    Flame Cutting:

    The material can be cut using conventional flame cutting practices without preheating. We recommend the following cutting parameters:-

    Milling :

    Abrasion resistant steel can be machined by milling.

    The following recommendations are given for general guidance:-

    Cold Bending :

    Cold bending should be performed with the bend axis perpendicular to the rolling direction when possible, as this is the less onerous direction. Here are some guidelines for bending to a 90° angle. However, bending radii should generally be as generous as possible.
