SAE 4140 Plates & Sheets are available in a variety of sizes, shapes, and surface finishes based on their surface finish and dimensions. There are several types of SAE 4140 plates and sheets that are commonly available, including:

    1. Hot Rolled Plates and Sheets: These plates and sheets are made from SAE 4140 steel that has been hot rolled at a high temperature to produce a rough surface finish. In general, hot-rolled plates and sheets are used in applications where it is not necessary to have a smooth surface finish on the surface.
    2. Cold Rolled Plates & Sheets:
In order to produce these plates and sheets, SAE 4140 steel is cold rolled at a low temperature, resulting in a smooth surface finish. A cold-rolled plate or sheet is usually used in applications where a high-quality finish on the surface of the material is required.
    3. Annealed Plates & Sheets:
It is important to note that these plates and sheets are heat-treated to improve their machinability and toughness. When the SAE 4140 steel is annealed, the steel is heated to a specific temperature and then cooled slowly to room temperature after it has been heated to a specific temperature.
    4. Normalized plates & sheets:
Plates and sheets made from these materials are heat-treated to improve their strength and toughness. It is necessary to heat the SAE 4140 steel to a specific temperature and then to allow it to cool in air in order to normalize it.
    5. Quenched & Tempered Plates & Sheets:
A heat treatment is applied to these plates and sheets in order to improve their hardness and strength. A quenching and tempering process involves heating the SAE 4140 steel to a specific temperature, quenching it in water or oil, and then tempering it at a lower temperature following the quenching process.

    Key features of EN19 Plate:

    • The EN19 Plate is an alloy steel of high quality
    • The EN 19 plate is also known as the high tensile steel plate
    • There is a good ductility and shock resistance in EN19 steel plate
    • There is good wear resistance in this product
    • Induction hardening is possible on EN19 Sail Hard steel plates

    AISI 4140 Plates / EN19 Plate Uses :

    • Gears
    • Pinions
    • Shafts
    • Spindles
    • Oil & Gas Industries

    Applications :

Originally, EN19 was developed to be used in machine tools and motors for gearing, pinions, shafts, spindles, etc., that are used in the machine tool and motor industry. In the later stages, its applications were much broader, and it is now widely used in industries such as oil and gas. As a general rule, EN19T is suitable for many applications, including gears, bolts, studs, and other high tensile steels where a high quality high-tensile steel grade is required.

    Typical Applications:

There are many different kinds of tools, machine plates, gears, shafts, sprockets, special machine parts molds, metal stamping, tool and die, shredders, automotive, oil & gas industries, machine shops, pulp mills, among others, that have been available through us for many years.

    Forging :

Forge very carefully at 850-1200°C, then cooling slowly in still air after forging to avoid shortening the forging process. This should not occur below this temperature.

    Annealing :

EN19T cooler for air cooling. Heat to about 680-700oC. Let cool in the air for a few minutes

    Hardening :

As this steel grade is commonly supplied ready heat treated, additional heat treatment may be required; annealed EN19 should be heated slowly to 860-890oC and then can be quenched in oil after a sufficient period of soaking at this temperature. The tempering should be carried out as soon as the tool reaches room temperature.

    Tempering :

It is important that you heat your ruling section carefully to a suitable temperature determined by a tempering chart or table. Soak for 2 hours per 25mm of ruling section at the temperature, and then allow it to cool in the open air for two hours. Tempering between 250-375 degrees Celsius is not recommended as tempering within this range will result in a decrease in impact value.

    Heat Treatment :

Due to factors such as the shape and size of each steel component, heat treatment temperatures, as well as the rate at which each component is heated, cooled and soaked will differ accordingly. It is also important to consider the type of furnace, quenching medium and facilities for transferring work pieces while heat treating EN19 alloy steel. For full guidance on heat treating EN19 alloy steel, please contact your heat treatment provider.
