The most commonly used stainless steel alloy of this type is Grade 304 stainless steel, which is one of the most versatile alloys on the market. Grade 304 is an austenitic chromium alloy, which is also known as an “18/8” stainless steel since it contains 18% chromium and 8% nickel.
As a result of its high chromium content, the material offers considerable resistance to corrosion and oxidation. While stainless steel alloys are resistant to most oxidising acids and can withstand ordinary rusting, they may tarnish over time. In order to increase the steel’s tensile strength, it must be cold worked. Post-weld annealing may be required for stainless steel sections that are heavily welded.
As a lower carbon variant of Grade 304, Type 304L can be welded without causing carbon precipitation (chromium carbide precipitation occurs during the welding process due to the heat applied, which depletes the steel’s chromium element, reducing its anti corrosion and oxidation properties.).
Therefore, Type 304L stainless steel is highly sought after in severely corrosive environments. There are a variety of commercial sectors, particularly in the chemical industry, in which this steel grade is used. Weld annealing is only necessary when there are excessive stress loads.
Belonging to the category of austenitic stainless steel, grade 304 is a testament to low cost investment solutions. Not only does the cost of ASTM A312 TP 304H Stainless Steel Seamless Pipes rate as economical, in terms of value, corrosion resistance, and mechanical properties it rates as being better than conventional carbon steel alloys. Firstly, the alloy for ASTM A312 TP 304L Stainless Steel Seamless Pipes contains higher alloying content than the former and the chemistry is designed to support basic applications keeping in mind the requirements of the application. However, the chemistry can be altered to suit user-specific requirements.
For instance, grade Stainless Steel 304l Pipe is a low chemistry alloy and is suited for applications where the confluence of pipes is to either flange, fittings, or pressure vessels, without the fear of intergranular corrosion. Low carbon austenitic alloys like the Stainless Steel 304L Seamless Pipe have the inclusion of nitrogen in their chemistry to improve the austenite stability, while also bringing up its yield strength, which was lost by the lowering of carbon. On the other hand, Stainless Steel 304H Pipe, which contains a higher content of carbon, is ideal for high-temperature environments.
By increasing the content of carbon in the alloy, the high carbon version of the SS UNS S30403 Welded Pipe delivers a good performance. Though the weldability of high carbon grade 304 is adequate, or may even be considered to be good, perhaps the same property of 304L SS Electropolished Pipes pales in comparison. Alternatively, 304L is not an adequate alloy for use in elevated temperature conditions as opposed to the high carbon version of DIN 1.4306 Hollow Pipes.
