    AN 41B is a chromium-alloyed nitriding steel grade that is commonly used in gears, crankshafts, and camshafts in a wide range of applications. As well as being known as 905M39 in the UK, it is also known as AISI 5140 in the US.

    It is common for EN 41B round bars to be hot rolled and to be supplied as annealed or normalized products. As well as being heat-treated to achieve high surface hardness and wear resistance, the steel can also be nitrided, which involves exposing the steel to a nitrogen-rich gas at high temperatures in order to achieve high surface hardness and wear resistance.

    There are a number of applications where EN 41B round bars are suitable due to their high surface hardness and wear resistance properties, and they have good strength and toughness properties. In addition to being easy to machine, they are also good at welding.     This grade is a low carbon-manganese-free cutting steel, which is very popular, due to its low carbon-manganese content. In order to enhance the wear resistance of the components, it can be case-hardened.

    Applied to:

    Nitriding Steel EN41B is suitable for applications that require excellent wear and abrasion resistance. Typical applications include connecting rods, small extruders, valve stems, and dies. In the automotive, textile, and general engineering industries, it is widely used. In addition to brick press plates, clutch plates, gudgeons, track and shackle pins, it is also suitable for other wear-resistant applications.

    TREATMENT WITH HEAT:

    Annealing: Slowly heat to 650-700°C. Air cools.

    • Hardening:
    • EN41B Nitriding Steel is supplied heat treated. If further heat treatment is required, annealed EN41B Nitriding Steel should be heated slowly to 870-930°C, then quenched in oil/polymer or water. Tools should be tempered as soon as they reach room temperature.

    A tempering chart or table can be used to select a suitable temperature for tempering (usually between 580 and 700°C). Allow the ruling sections to soak at the temperature for 2 hours per 25mm, then let them cool in the air.

    En41B Alloy Steel is a chromium-aluminum-molybdenum nitriding steel usually supplied hardened and tempered. It is also known as nitrating steel. To improve wear resistance and impact load on material, the material is hardened to a certain depth in nitrating treatment.

    Effortlessly Relieving:

    Before hardening, remove stresses by heating to 700°C, equalizing, then cooling slowly if machining operations were heavy or the tool was unbalanced.

    Aspects of tempering:

    Using a tempering chart or table, select a suitable temperature.
