How is EN24T round mild steel bar/rod used?
Due to its excellent machinability in the “T” condition, EN24T round steel bar is a commonly used through-hardening alloy steel grade. Shafts, gears, bolts, and many other components are often specified in EN24T.

Heat Treatment:
Due to factors such as the shape and size of each steel component, the temperature of the heat treatment, including the rate of heating, cooling, and soaking time will vary depending on the steel component. It is also important to consider other factors during the heat treatment process, such as the type of furnace, the quenching medium, and the facilities for transferring the work piece. If you would like full guidance on the heat treatment of alloy steel, please do not hesitate to contact your heat treatment provider.
Hardening:
The EN24 is supplied and ready to be heat treated when it is received. In order to undergo a further heat treatment, EN24 that has already been annealed should be heated slowly to 830-850°C and after adequate soaking at this temperature, it should be quenched in oil. As soon as the tools have reached room temperature, they should be tempered. As a result of hardening in a neutral salt bath, there will be less chance of scaling and decarburization occurring. The temperature should be raised to 830-850°C and after equalization, the oil should be quenched.
Tempering:
In order to temper the steel correctly, it should be heated carefully to a suitable temperature selected by reference to a tempering chart or table, soaked for 2 hours per 25mm of ruling section, and then cool in the air. Tempering within the range of 250-375°C is not recommended since tempering within this range will result in a serious loss of impact value. In terms of tempering temperature, it is dependent on the required mechanical properties of the steel. This steel can achieve EN24U, EN24V, EN24W, EN24Y & EN24Z standards.

Forging Properties:
In order to forge metal, it is necessary to preheat it carefully and then raise the temperature to 1000-1100°C. Forging the steel at a temperature below 850-1100°C is not recommended. After forging cool slowly preferably in a furnace.
Stress Relieving:
It is beneficial to relieve stress before hardening parts that have been heavily machined, ground, or otherwise subjected to cold work. You need to heat the food carefully to 650-670°C, and soak it well before cooling it down in the furnace or outside.
Normalizing:
- Nominal normalized temperature: 840-900°C.

Annealing:
It should be heated slowly to 840-860°C, soaked well, and then allowed to cool with a furnace to 580°C before being withdrawn.
Density:
Density – 7840 kg/m3
Machinability:
In the “T” condition, EN24 is a very popular grade of through-hardening alloy steel. This steel is readily machinable and available in several different grades.
Welding:
If the welding has been completed, allow the components to cool to 180°C before undergoing the post-weld heat treatment.

Working and Heat Treatment:

EN24 / EN24T / 817M40 applications:
Gears, pinions, shafts, spindles, and the like were initially designed to be used with EN24 in the motor vehicle and machine tool industries. Later, its uses expanded. It can produce parts for locomotives, cranes, rolling mills, coal-cutting machinery, etc., where strength and fatigue resistance is called for. As well as die casting and hot metal working, EN24 and EN24T can be used for pass bolsters, racks and pinions, angle pins, hot aluminum stamping dies, steel stamping beds, lower temperature nut, bolt, and rivet heading dies, and large section drop forging dies. This material is widely used in the plastic and rubber molding industries for molds (particularly rubber molds), hob retaining rings, patens, rings for built-up molds, and stop pins for molds. EN24 is usually supplied hardened and tempered to ‘T’ condition for molds. EN24T should be annealed and heat treated to achieve a higher hardness.
