In addition to having a Nickel Chromium Case Hardening Steel with a Nickel Chromium content, EN36B Round Bars are also supplied in bright, drawn, hot-rolled forms. Upon carburizing, EN36B produces a hard case with a strong core while maintaining a remarkable degree of toughness, shock resistance, and durability. The high tensile strength of this material, as well as its nickel and chrome content, makes it an excellent material for making crankshafts, gears, steering worms, and track rod pins, among other applications. In addition to it being hardenable, tough, and having a high core strength, EN36B also offers excellent fatigue resistance and is particularly suited to heavy-duty and highly stressed applications.
It is possible to achieve 850 – 1230 N/mm2 core strengths when the material is carburized and hardened. The chromium content facilitates hardenability, while nickel content increases toughness and resistance to stock corrosion. Steel 655M13 is often referred to as EN36B steel or ASTM A709 steel, the equivalent grade under the previous standard BS 970: 1955.
EN36 Square Bar is a tough, hard, and strong material that works well in heavy-duty applications because of its high core strength and hardness. The alloy is a case-hardening engineering steel, a type of steel that hardens by processing a bar with carburizing, which is the process in which carbon is added to the bar. Charcoal or carbon monoxide is used as the carbon source for the coating. It is heated so that the outer layer of the EN36 Carbon Steel Round Bar becomes hard while the inner layer remains soft and pliable, as was initially the case. Upon being processed for hardening and carburizing, the core strength of the 655m13 Hex Bar can be as high as 1230 N/mm2 after being processed for hardening and carburizing. This alloy is ideal for engineering applications involving extreme stress.

EN36B Round Bar Key Features:
The EN36B Round Bars provide excellent toughness and fatigue resistance due to the alloy’s nickel and chrome content, contributing to a substantial tensile strength and ability to harden deep. With excellent surface strength and a soft but strong core, this carburizing steel grade offers a very high surface strength with excellent toughness and fatigue resistance.
Why is EN36B material good for Round Bar?
The EN36B steel grade is one of the most common grades of steel that can be used for Round Bars. It is most suitable for Round Bars because it has a low carbon content, meaning the material will not harden or become brittle with time. This makes it an excellent material for Round Bars.
Benefits of EN36B Round Bar
- Designed specifically for carburizing
- Increased shock resistance and toughness
- Increased hardenability
- For highly stressed & heavy duty applications
- Excellent fatigue resistance
- Supplied in the annealed condition
- Good machinability

Applications Of Alloy Steel EN36B Round Bar:
It is often used in the manufacture of gears, worm shafts, pinion shafts, and spline shafts, as well as in the manufacture of other precision components. A specification such as this one is typically used when it is necessary to have a hard surface that is wear-resistant and strong at the same time. Additionally, they are used in auto and heavy vehicle transmission components, engineering machinery gearbox parts, aircraft gears, mining steering worms, chuck jaws, track pins, gudgeon pins, mining gearbox gears, pinions, and cogs, among other applications.
Typical use of EN36B Round Bar
High duty gears for aircraft, auto and heavy duty vehicle transmission components, steering worms, track rod pins, gudgeon pins, timing wheels, breech mechanisms and small arms parts.
EN36B Round Bar Forging
- Initial Forging Temperature:1180-1200℃
- Final Forging Temperature:800-850℃
- Heating Rate: Strictly control the heating speed, which should be uniform and stable to prevent cracking caused by improper heating.
- Holding Time: Ensure the material is thoroughly and evenly heated, and the holding time should be manageable and short.
- Forging Ratio: above 4:1
- Post-Forging Treatment: EN36 steel must be annealed after forging.
