What is the En8D Carbon Steel Round Bar ?
In flat and square sections, carbon steel is available as bright drawn key steel. The medium tensile strength of key steel makes it suitable for components such as plain, gib head, taper, and parallel keys. Tolerances for key steel are specified in British Standard BS46 and BS4235. Spring steels EN42, CS70, CS80, CS95 and CS100 are available in hardened and tempered spring steel strips, annealed spring steel strips, spring steel plates, and spring steel sheets. Bars and plates of EN43 spring steel are available. It conforms to BS970, BS1449, BS EN10083-1, BS EN10083-2, BS EN 10277 and BS EN 10278 standards. X120Mn12 1.3401 is a manganese steel with 1% carbon steel and 11% to 14% manganese content. High manganese steel is available in full plates or cut to your specifications and offers excellent work hardening properties.

Heat treatment:
EN8D can be tempered at a heat of between 550°C to 660°C (1022°F-1220°F), heating for about 1 hour for every inch of thickness, then cool in oil or water.
Normalizing of EN8 bright mild steel takes place at 830-860°C (1526°F-1580°F) then it is cooled in air.
Quenching in oil or water after heating to this temperature will harden the steel.
Hardening:
Heat the component slowly to 820-860°C and allow it to be heated through. Quench in oil or water.
Tempering:
Temper the EN8D component immediately after quenching whilst tools still hand warm. Re-heat the EN8D component to the tempering temperature then soak for one hour per 25 millimeters of total thickness (2 hours minimum) Cool in air. For most applications tempering of EN8D will be between 550-660°C.

Forging Properties:
The steel should be preheated carefully, and then the temperature should be raised to 1050°C for forging. Forge at 850°C or higher. Cool slowly after forging, preferably in a furnace.
Normalising:
EN8D bright mild steel is normalised at 830-860°C (1526°F-1580°F), then cooled in air.
Annealing:
Slowly heat to 680-710°C, then soak well. The furnace should be cooled slowly.
Welding:
As EN8D bright mild steel contains a lot less carbon than it used to, it is possible to weld pieces up to 18mm thick without preheating with MIG wire (SG2) or a 7018 electrode.
Over 18mm would require a pre-heat of 100°C (212°F) in order to prevent cracking.Anneal afterward is recommended to prevent breaking.
