Due to its high nickel content, Inconel 600 Forged Bar is highly corrosion resistant against organic and inorganic compounds. Due to its nickel content, Alloy 600 Nickel Hot Rolled Bar is virtually immune to corrosion cracking caused by chloride ions.
By adding chromium and nickel to Inconel 600 Polished Bar, the alloy becomes more resistant to sulfur containing compounds as well as more resistant to oxidizing conditions at elevated temperatures or in the presence of corrosive solutions. As a result of precipitation hardening, Inconel Alloy 600 Round Rod cannot be hardened and strengthened; the alloy can only be hardened and strengthened by cold working.
The versatility of ASTM B166 600 Inconel Rod has led to its use in various applications, particularly those involving temperatures ranging from cryogenic to above 2000°F. It can be used as bubble towers for fatty acid processing, condensers for fatty acid processing, heaters, stills, and evaporator tubes for fatty acid processing flaking trays for the manufacture of sodium sulphide; as well as the Inconel 600 UNS N06600 Hollow Bar is used in several equipment’s for handling abietic acid in the manufacture of paper pulp. The Alloy 600 UNS N06600 Bar Stock has been extensively used in applications for equipment in the chemical industry for its tensile strength and corrosion resistance properties.
Uses of Inconel 600
Because of its high corrosion resistance and strength, Inconel 600 is widely used in the chemical industry. In addition to heaters, stills, bubble towers, and processing condensers for fatty acids, tube, tube sheets, and flaking trays are commonly used in this industry to produce sodium sulfide, as well as equipment for handling abietic acid in pulp and paper production. When heated, Inconel alloys form a thick, stable oxide layer that protects surfaces from increased attack.
As well as being used in the heat-treating industry, alloy 600 is also widely used. A heat-treating basket or tray, retort, roller hearth, and mufflers are all made of Inconel 600 because of its strength and corrosion resistance at high temperatures. Inconel 600 is also used in aeronautics for components that must withstand high temperatures, such as lockwires, turbine seals, and exhaust liners.
As a standard construction material in nuclear reactors, alloy 600 provides excellent corrosion resistance to high purity water, and there is no evidence of chloride-ion stress-corrosion cracking in the reactor water systems. Known as Inconel 600T, Inconel 600 is manufactured to exacting specifications for nuclear applications.
What is Inconel 600 material
With a popular face-centered cubic crystal-like structure, Inconel is a superalloy with Austenitic-Nickel-Chromium content. As specified in international specifications, Inconel 600 is a nickel-chromium alloy designed to work at cryogenic to high temperatures. Inconel 600 is known as UNS N06600.
Inconel Alloy 600 Machining and Working Instructions
A variety of machining/cutting methods can be used to machine alloy 600, including drilling, boring, turning, grinding, and milling. It is best to machine this alloy with heavy-duty equipment and cutting tools that can withstand the loads and heat generated in the process. Tools must be sharp and have the correct geometry as well. It is slightly more machinable than Type 304 stainless steel, but slightly less machinable than Type 303 stainless steel.

Additional Properties of Inconel 600
In addition to its moderate yield strength of 25,000 to 50,00 psi (172 to 345 MPa) when annealed, Inconel 600 exhibits a wide range of hardness and strength depending on its form and condition. Combined with elongations ranging from 55% to 35%, Inconel 600 is easy to fabricate. With room temperature impact strength and decreasing temperatures tough-to-brittle, Inconel 600 is easy to fabricate
Inconel 600 can be fabricated hot or cold, and it can be joined with standard welding, brazing, and soldering processes. The alloy can be strengthened and hardened with cold work, but manufacturers can achieve a wide range of mechanical properties by combining cold work and heat treatments.
Resistance to corrosion
As a result of its high chromium content, Inconel alloy 600 is highly corrosion resistant. Especially in oxidizing environments, Inconel alloy 600 is more corrosion resistant than Nickel (alloy200) and Nickel (alloy201).
Incorporating nickel into Inconel 600 makes it extremely resistant to corrosion by various organic and inorganic compounds under reducing conditions. As a result of Inconel 600’s nickel content, it is exceptionally resistant to chloride-ion stress corrosion cracking as well as amazing resistance to alkaline solutions.
Applications Inconel 600
- Pressure vessels and reactors
2: The chemical, food, and aerospace industries.
3: In nuclear equipment, steam generators, superheaters, and electronic components.
4: The material can be found in gas turbine blades, seals, and combustors, turbocharger rotors, and seals.
5: Waste incinerators now use Inconel boilers widely.
6: Automobiles also use Inconel alloy.
7: Inconel 600 is recommended for catalytic regeneration applications in petrochemical works where temperatures higher than 700°C are recommended to extend their service life.
Inconel 600 has the following general machining characteristics
-
A high cutting temperature and large cutting force, usually 1.5 to 2 times that of carbon steel.
-
As a result of severe wear, cutting tools have a very short service life.
-
During machining, there is serious work hardening.
-
It is very difficult to dispose of the chips during the machining process.
The amount of cold work, grain size, chemical composition, and material dimensions all affect the alloy’s behavior during heating. Therefore, heat treatment times and temperatures are critical. Inconel 600 can be bright-heated in a vacuum or in dry hydrogen, but it must be pickled to achieve a bright surface.

Is Inconel 600 Bright Bar Different From Cold Rolled Square Bar?
With high resistance to heat, oxidation, mild chemicals, acids, and heat, nickel chromium alloys such as Inconel 600 can also withstand high temperatures. In applications with high temperatures and corrosive environments, a bright bar has a bright surface with less absolute roughness. Square cold-rolled bars have a square cross section and are produced by cold drawing. They also have a lower level of absolute roughness due to the cold drawing. In structural applications, square bars are stronger than round bars.
Inconel 600 has what characteristics?
- Widely resistant to corrosive media.
- It is virtually immune to corrosion cracking caused by chlorine ions
- Magnetic-free
- Mechanical properties of excellent quality
- Strong and weldable at a wide range of temperatures
Although Inconel 600 has a relatively good corrosion resistance in organic acids such as acetic acid, formic acid, stearic acid, and others, its corrosion resistance in inorganic acids is medium. Due to the first and second recycling use of high purity water in the nuclear reactor, Inconel 600 ASTM alloy is excellent at resisting corrosion cracks.
Stress corrosion environments at high temperatures, especially those with high-strength caustic alkalies, can cause cracks in Inconel 600 ASTM alloy. Therefore, Inconel 600 material must be completely stress-relieved at 1650°F/1 hr or 1450°F/4 hr (900°C/1 hr or 790°C/4 hr) before processing, and operating stresses must be kept to a minimum. At higher temperatures, Inconel 600 may stress-corrode cracks when in contact with mercury. If the alloy is used in a high-temperature application where mercury may be present, the caustic-alkali service should be applied.
Generally, Inconel 600 alloys are used for furnaces and heat-treating parts such as boxes muffles, roller hearths, retorts, and similar items that are resistant to oxidation and furnace atmospheres. As Inconel 600 is resistant to nitrogen at high temperatures, it is the standard material for nitriding containers.
