Mechanics ratings
Despite the fact that nickel & cobalt base corrosion, temperature and wear-resistant alloys, such as Inconel 718, are classified as moderate to difficult to machine, it should be noted that conventional production methods can be used at satisfactory rates for machining these alloys. These alloys work harden rapidly during machining, generate high heat when cutting, weld to the cutting tool surface and offer high resistance to metal removal due to their high shear strengths. During machining operations, the following points should be considered:
As much as possible, the machine should be rigid and overpowered.
The work piece and tool should be held rigidly. Keep tool overhangs to a minimum.
SHARPNESS OF TOOLS – Keep your tools sharp at all times. Regularly sharpen your tools rather than only when necessary. A dull tool has a wear land of 0.015 inches.
For most machining operations, use positive rake angle tools. Tools with negative rake angles can be used for intermittent cuts and heavy stock removal. For most applications, carbide-tipped tools are recommended. For intermittent cutting, high speed tools are often recommended, with lower production rates.
Maintain positive cutting action by using heavy, constant feeds. Work hardening occurs, tool life deteriorates, and close tolerances are impossible if feed is slowed and the tool dwells in the cut.
When using carbide tooling, soluble oils are recommended as lubricants. The machining parameters are presented in detail
Treatment with heat
To achieve the best combination of tensile properties and stress rupture properties, the following heat treatment should be used:
Cool 1 hr 1750°F to 1800°F (954 °C to 982 °C) air cool + 8 hr 1325°F (718°C) cool 100°F / hr to 1150°F (56°C / hr to 621°C), hold 8 hrs and air cool.
It is recommended to use the following heat treatment for best room temperature and cryogenic tensile properties:
After 1 to 2 hours at 1950°F (1066°C), air cool + 8 hours at 1325°F (718°C), cool 100°F/hr to 1150°F (56°C/hr to 621°C), hold 8 hours, and air cool.
Efficacy
Working in the heat
A maximum furnace temperature of 2050°F (1121°C) is used for hot-working. 1700/1850°F (927/1010°C) hot-cold working will improve the strength of the forging if the service temperature is below about 1100°F (593°C). It is not recommended to soak at the forging temperature for an extended period of time. In order to avoid the formation of duplex grain structures, the material should be given uniform reductions.
The machining process
It is possible to machine the alloy either annealed or age-hardened. With age-hardened tools, chip breaker tools perform better and produce a better finish. Tool life will be slightly longer if the tool is annealed.
The welding process
Depending on the conditions, alloy 718 can be welded either annealed or aged. A heat-affected zone will form when welding in an aged condition.
