One of the most versatile and commonly used stainless steels on the market, Grade 304 stainless steel is the most standard used alloy of this type. Essentially, Grade 304 is an austenitic chromium alloy which is also known as an “18/8” stainless as the make-up of the steel is 18% chromium and 8% nickel. The chromium content promotes the material’s considerable resistance to the effects of corrosion and oxidation. The stainless steel alloy resists most oxidizing acids and will withstand ordinary rusting though this does not mean that the steel will not tarnish over time. The steel needs to be cold worked to generate higher tensile strength. For stainless steel sections which are welded heavily, post-weld annealing may be necessary to provide maximum corrosive resistance.
(304L 30403) stainless steels are variations of the 18 percent chromium – 8 percent nickel austenitic alloy, the most familiar and most frequently used alloy in the stainless steel family. These alloys may be considered for a wide variety of applications. Alloy 304 is the standard alloy since AOD technology has made lower carbon
levels more easily attainable and economical. Alloy 304 is used for welded products which might be exposed to conditions which could cause intergranular corrosion in service. Alloy 304 is a modification of Alloy 304 in which the carbon content is controlled to a range of 0.04-0.10 to provide improved high-temperature strength to parts exposed to temperatures above 800°F.

- Thermal conductivity: 16.3 W/m-k (100°C)

Corrosion Resistance of Stainless Steel 304 Plate
- The alloy 304/304L is resistant to atmospheric corrosion, foods, beverages, and many organic and inorganic chemicals in moderately oxidizing to moderately reducing environments. With a high chromium content, the alloy is resistant to oxidizing solutions such as nitric acid up to 55% weight and up to 176°F (80°C). Acetic acid is also moderately resistant to alloy 304/304L. Nickel in the alloy provides resistance to mildly reducing solutions such as pure phosphoric acid, regardless of concentration, in cold solutions and up to 10% in hot solutions. In moderate temperatures, the alloy can also be used in caustic solutions without chlorides or fluorides.
- When exposed to highly reducing environments, such as chlorides and sulfuric acid, alloy 304/304L performs poorly. Fresh water service with low chloride levels (less than 100ppm) is well suited for alloy 304/304L. When chloride levels are high, the grade is susceptible to pitting and crevice corrosion. Molybdenum-containing alloys, such as 316/316L, will perform better under these more severe conditions. Marine environments are not recommended for alloy 304/304L.
- The corrosion resistance of Alloys 304, 304L, and 304H will be roughly equal in most corrosive environments. Due to its low carbon content, Alloy 304L should be used in environments sufficiently corrosive to cause intergranular corrosion of welds and heat-affected zones.
Fabrication Data of Stainless Steel 304 Plate
Standard fabrication practices can be used to weld and process alloy 304.
- In most hot working processes, 1652–2102°F (750–1150°C) is the recommended temperature range. After hot working, the material should be water quenched or rapidly cooled by other means to achieve maximum corrosion resistance.
- During cold forming, the alloy is quite ductile and forms easily. The alloy will become stronger and harder after cold working, and it might become slightly magnetic as well.
- Most standard welding processes can be used to weld alloy 304. There is no need for a post-weld heat treatment.
- During machining, alloy 304 undergoes work hardening and chip breaking. It is best to operate at slower speeds, use heavier feeds, apply excellent lubrication, use sharp tooling, and run powerful rigid equipment to achieve the best machining results.

Stainless Steel 304 Materials Prices
Material prices for stainless steel 304 are directly related to raw material prices, including iron ore, scrap metal, chromium, nickel, and other alloying elements. Since stainless steel and nickel alloy plates contain high amounts of nickel and chromium, their production costs are high. Meanwhile, mild steel is the least expensive steel available, followed by carbon steel, 400 series stainless steel, aluminum, alloy steel, and 300 series stainless steel. Titanium, Inconel, Monel, and Hastelloy are expensive alloys due to their high nickel, chromium, and moly content.
